An AMOLED display consists of a matrix of OLED pixels that generate light (luminescence) upon electrical activation. The OLED pixels are integrated onto a thin film transistor (TFT) array, which functions as a mesh of switches to control the currents flowing to individual pixels. 

TFT backplane technology is crucial in the fabrication of AMOLED displays. TFT technology based on low temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) material is primarily used in today’s AMOLEDs. However, leading companies in the industry are working on the next generation metal oxide (MO) TFT technology for its superiority over LTPS TFT.
